Know your Enemy

While savoring a well-deserved glass of Caustic Sour after a rather eventful morning at the Anderson Orbital station in the Palanti system, you receive a message on your datapad from the Y.C.P.L. , presenting themselves as a gathering of talented scientists in various fields. Strangely, you find no information about them in your codex. They claim to be seeking trustworthy CMDRs to undertake various tasks they deem "Crucial to the survival of humanity". You finish your drink and decide to contact them to learn more.

For Science!

You make your way to your ship, settle into your seat, and initiate communication with the Y.C.P.L. After a few seconds of waiting, someone responds:

In your ship

Hush, Julia, one of them is calling!… (throat clearing)…
Greetings, Commander, I am Professor James Hopper. We’re delighted that you responded to our message!
My collective and I have undertaken very serious research on the threat that, well, plagues humanity!
If you’re interested, or rather, if you agree, we would be honored to collaborate with a commander as serious and daring as yourself!
… Especially since you are the only one who has answered our call in the past few weeks…

Something in your interlocutor’s speech raises a question in your mind, but you continue to listen attentively.

We need you to go to the HIP 17125 system. According to our intelligence, there are enemy biomechanical data somewhere out there that are crucial to our study.

Find them, scan them with your SRV then send them to us, and we will contact you when we receive them…

Yes, alright, I’m on my way… uh… Be careful, Commander! Over!

Certainly, the conversation was somewhat strange, perhaps a bit too solemn, but regardless, the mission entrusted to you has sparked your curiosity. Set a course, Commander, for science!

HIP 17125, Planet A 3 A, Thargoid scout crash site. Use your Full Spectrum System Scanner (FSS) to scan the solar system and locate the planet, then a Surface Scanner to probe A 3 A and navigate to the crash site.

Unknown structure

Once your target is discovered, proceed to step 2

Do it for progress!

You eventually discover this crash site hidden in the system. A bit more precision from your new « associates » wouldn’t have hurt.

The Thargoid scout crash site.

This crash site was first discovered on September 28, 3303, by an unknown CMDR, marking the very first Thargoid scout crash site found in the game.

After collecting and sending the data from the samples taken from the stranded Thargoid device, you return to your ship. Barely having time to remove your suit, your datapad starts ringing.

Well done, Commander!
According to the analysis of your data, this enemy ship was shot down almost 6 years ago, but the samples that have reached us are still in excellent condition!
It’s good work! We will be able to exploit them to their full potential… [Background noise] Make less noise, Julia, I’m talking to our associate!… I apologize!
Your next target is in the HIP 17862 system. According to our information, it would be something much larger than what you found previously. Inspect the area with your VRS as usual! Hurry, Commander, for progress!

Proud of your recent discovery, the prospect of finding new things delights you! Fire up your FSD!

HIP 17862, Planet 6 CA, Thargoid interceptor crash site. Use an Full Spectrum System Scanner (FSS) to scan the system and locate the planet, then a Surface Scanner to probe 6 CA and navigate to the crash site.

Once you’ve found the second target, go on to step 3

Do it for humanity!

You manage to locate this exceptional site in the system. Your investigative instincts sharpen as you fulfill the laboratory’s missions.

The Thargoid Interceptor crash site.

This crash site was discovered on November 3, 3302. It’s the first Thargoid interceptor crash site found by humanity. It notably contains fragments of probes, Thargoid resin, and samples of Thargoid technology.

With these new samples sent to your contact, you return to your ship. Passing through the decontamination airlock, your datapad rings. You remove your suit and sit at the controls to answer:

You have exceeded our expectations in terms of results on this crash site! The wealth of information collected here is akin to a real gold mine… [crackling noise] Moustache, leave that alone-[crackling noises]… Are you still there?
My apologies!
Well, you’re definitely someone competent; our latest request should be a walk in the park for you! I’m sending you the coordinates for your next destination. Once there, explore the area with your SRV and gather as much information as possible. For humanity, Commander!

A few seconds after hanging up, you receive a message: "HIP 19026". Onward, CMDR!

HIP 19026, Planet B 1 C. The target is an abandoned Thargoid surface base named "Unknown Structure Scan".

Once the third target is discovered, proceed to it and move on to step 4

Our new collaborator?

You have no trouble discovering the enormous Thargoid base hidden in the system. You’re making visible progress!

The Thargoid Base site.

And yes, it’s the very first Thargoid base discovered in the game! Since then, over 200 others have been counted. They notably look like the Titan-class motherships first discovered in 3309, and it is assumed that these bases are the remnants of an ancient generation of motherships succumbing to the Mycoid Virus, but that’s another story…

Your recent discovery was much larger than you thought it would be. These ruins of a mothership held countless data and samples. As you prepare to send your findings to the Y.C.P.L., your datapad activates, and you answer the incoming communication:

Commander! How is your mission going? Did you succeed?! That’s fantastic!…
Can you hear, Julia? It’s a total success!… Excuse me, I had to share your success with my sister.
We are truly delighted to have found you, Commander. You don’t know how precious your help is to us!
Don’t send us the latest data you’ve collected; instead, let’s meet!
There’s something you need to know about my sister and me. I’ll explain everything when you’re here. I’m sending you the coordinates of the system via encrypted message.
Once there, you should understand where we are.
See you soon, Commander!

A few seconds later, you receive a message that you open:

The mysterious message…

Scanning the QR code reveals a message in morse code that, once decoded, gives you your next destination: Amadioha Scientific Installation

Once you’ve found your next destination, proceed to step 5

Piece of cake

You drop out of supercruise, and suddenly, there it is in front of you: a white dwarf !
Without taking any risks, you approach the space laboratory. Once near the installation, you receive a communication:

White dwarf

It is possible to overcharge your FSD reactor by jumping to the end of a neutron star or white dwarf for a few seconds, provided you have a fuel scoop. This will multiply the range of your next jump by 4 in the case of a neutron star and 1.5 for a white dwarf. Caution: getting too close to the star may prove fatal for your ship.

The right course to follow

Commander! You managed to find us! Then again, I never doubted you for a second!
So yes, as you can see, I’m James, and this is my little sister Julia. We live here with our father, a biomechanics researcher who recently specialized in Thargoids. It’s to assist him and to help humanity that my sister and I founded the Y.C.P.L., the Young Cosmic Prodigies Laboratory.

Suddenly, your datapad scrambles, and the image seems to change. The symbol disappears, replaced by a camera showing two children and a black cat.

My sister and I have an IQ well above the average for children our age. With all the atrocities related to the Thargoid offensive in the past year, we couldn’t just stand by. You can start transferring the data collected on the Thargoid base now. We’ll get the most out of it and use it to help our father in his research.
You can be sure that we’ll meet again, Commander. You’ve been a valuable help to us, and we are truly grateful. Thank you again, Commander. Take care of yourself in these troubled times. See you soon!

As you look toward the space laboratory, you see two children waving at you. James and Julia bid you farewell through the large porthole. With a smile on your face, you salute them before leaving the place.
