The Echo of the Thetis

You drop off your very last cargo of painite at Nasmyth Station in the Sekhemet system and take the opportunity to stop for a meal.
This station looks like any other refining station, although you sense something heavy in the air. Normally, it wouldn't have caught your attention, but this time it's different.
Despite the oppressive atmosphere, you settle at the bar to enjoy a local meal…

The Tragedy of the Thetis

You cross the station and arrive in the rest room.
As you take a seat at the bar, you spot the barmaid at the other end, busy putting away clean dishes. She eventually sees you and takes your order.

Nasmyth Station’s bar

You’re browsing the station news while waiting for your meal and come across an article about the Thetis tragedy in 3304.

Daily Nasmyth: Six Years On, the Mystery of the Thetis Persists

Six years ago, Thetis became the scene of an unexplained tragedy.
This peaceful generational vessel, which employed many people from Sekhemet, suffered a strange attack that forced its passengers to kill each other. To this day, the cause and perpetrator remain a mystery.

The area around Thetis remains abandoned and dangerous. The authorities strongly advise against any exploration, fearing that the original threat is still present.

You’re so engrossed in this new mystery that you even forget that your meal has just been served.
Nasmyth Station’s famous cherry tomato soup is no match for the Thetis drama.

You swallow the entire meal without even thinking about the taste and, without looking back, leave the bar and head for the hangar.

Finally aboard your ship, all you can think about is seeing the Thetis with your own eyes!

A quick search on your dashboard reveals the position of the abandoned vessel.

The Abandoned Ship

Your ship emerges from supercruise and at last you see the generational ship you’ve been told about.
You don’t yet know what horrors took place here, but you’re about to find out.

Thetis generation ship

As you get closer to your target, you’ll notice data links that are still active. They must contain important information.

MADNESS AND GHOSTS 1/5:
Still all quiet out here in the black. Just had our very first ninth-gen child born on ship.

That takes the current population to 17,401. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary. Apart from reports from some residents at the northern end of C-Deck. They’ve heard some kind of strange whispering sound coming from their apartment comms unit. I’m sure it’s nothing, but I’ve dispatched a member of tech to investigate.

MADNESS AND GHOSTS 2/5:
We have an emergency situation on board. Some kind of epidemic, it’s driving people insane. I’ve managed to source it to a digital signal that keeps broadcasting within the comms array.

It started on C-Deck, but now the entire population of decks C to F have been massacred. They just went crazy and started killing each other. I’ve isolated the signal, so it’s stopped for now. Just trying to identify the source. It should be easy enough to delete the beacon if I can find the right frequency.

I wanna know what the message says, but I’m… I’m just too scared to listen.

MADNESS AND GHOSTS 3/5:
I’ve done it. I’ve managed to decrypt the signal and identify the source. But it’s even more confusing than I thought. The signal originates from an uninhabited planet we passed 15 light years ago.

Who sent it and how it managed to infect the comms array I have no idea. That’s the good news. The bad news is, I heard the message.

I was trying to run it through the translator and I forgot the speaker was on. It’s the same message relayed again and again and again – it’s more a whisper than anything else;
it says, "kill them all"

MADNESS AND GHOSTS 4/5:
Blood. Blood everywhere.
It’s spread on the walls.

People have started writing words in it but it’s a script I can’t identify.
I’m alone now on the comms deck.

Pearson was the last one with me but I had to I had to stab him in the throat to stop him… stop him…
I can’t remember what I had to stop him doing but… he’s dead now.

I can hear people out there. Some of them are still walking around. Some of them are barely breathing. I have to find them.

I have to silence them. I have to…

MADNESS AND GHOSTS 5/5:
C_mm_ Lo_ 000.0.00 ….k.l……h.m……..l……………….

The recording ends, but you don’t notice because you’re still in shock.
How could a digital signal cause such a tragedy?

Suddenly, you notice that your onboard computer has picked up encrypted wake data…
Start the decryption tool and get to work!

Once you’ve deciphered the wake, go on to step 3

    Chasing the Signal

Your journey comes to an end when you come face to face with this moon, which undoubtedly holds an interesting discovery in store for you.
You’re convinced that a ship from the Thetis came here!

    The mysterious moon

There must be something hidden here… Ready to be discovered!
You send out a salvo of probes to discover the secrets of this star with your own eyes.

Once you’ve reached the wreck, move on to step 4

    A Survivor?

The sight of that crashed ship makes your blood run cold. Someone must have escaped from the Thetis and taken refuge here, on this moon.

You get out with your SRV and walk around the carcass.

    Crashed ship

There’s some debris and material on the ground next to the carcass, but you can’t find any visible sign of where this mysterious survivor has fled to…

He must have taken refuge in a nearby base or camp… This moon hasn’t yet revealed all its secrets.

There’s an abandoned base called Gregory’s Rest on the moon. This is where the fugitive has taken refuge.

Once you’ve discovered the survivor’s destination, go on to step 5

    A Horrible Discovery

Thanks to the data collected by your probes, you can easily find the facility that sheltered the Thetis survivor.
Unfortunately, it seems to have been abandoned for some time…

    The abandoned base

Despite this, you decide to explore it with your SRV to find new clues.

After a few minutes, you see data links on your radar. Scanning them reveals a series of logs:

    SURVEY TEAM 43 1/5:
Survey Team 43, Commander’s Log. Ever since we saw that light show in Sector 12, Hopkins has been acting oddly. He’s become reclusive and aggressive, and to be honest I’m starting to worry about him.

I think in the morning we’ ll get him checked over by the medic, make sure nothing’s wrong.

I’ve called command and requested an evac team for Hopkins. He needs medical care that we simply can’t provide.
They should only take a few days to get here, we can hold the fort till then.

    SURVEY TEAM 43 2/5:
Command come in we need help.
Hopkins escaped custody. He went mad, talking about some mission. He made no sense. Jenkins, Greer and Davies are all dead. We need backup now!

Damn it he’s taken out the comms! There is no way for us to contact command.
If the rescue team doesn’t hurry up there won’t be anyone to rescue.

    SURVEY TEAM 43 3/5:
    Is this thing transmitting?

    Hello? Anyone?
Control, if you read me, whatever you do, don’t come down here. It’s not safe.

He’s coming, I’ve got to go.

    SURVEY TEAM 43 4/5:
I don’t have long. I think he knows where I am.
There are no survivors. I’m the last one left.

    My god! He’s found me!

    SURVEY TEAM 43 5/5:
    Rescue Team 88 reporting.

    We’ve found a survivor.
He’s not saying much, just mumbles about his mission. He’s in pretty bad shape and the rest of the crew didn’ t survive whatever attacked them out there.

We’ll bring him back to base. 88 out.

    You won’t believe your ears!

One of the survivors of the Thetis came here and found a way to infect one of the members of Inspection Team 43. He must have died here by now, but poor Hopkins was found alive.

If it was hit by the same digital signal as the people aboard the Thetis, the rescue team didn’t escape unscathed.

You climb back aboard your ship and suddenly the on-board computer starts ringing: A new encrypted wake has been detected!
If you can decrypt it, you’ll surely know where the rescue team went with the infected.

    ☊⍜⍀⍀⎍⌿⏁⟒⎅ ⌇⟟☌⋏⏃⌰

The base is named in honor of Chris Gregory, the artistic director of Elite Dangerous.

Once you’ve found your next destination, go on to step 6

    The Source!

The cryptic wake was crystal clear and you followed it without question.
But it’s not until you arrive that you realize what this place is really about…

    Thargoid remains

It was all the work of the Thargoids all along!
You take out the SRV to search the area and make a grim discovery:

You come face to face with the wreckage of a SRV from rescue team 88.

Judging by the signs of battle, they must have attacked the Thargoid with everything they had…

But at least they took this atrocious creature with them to the grave!

But that’s not all… In the heart of the Thargoid remains, you’ll discover an as-yet-unknown device…

    Strange Thargoid device

You’re convinced: the Thargoids have been experimenting with a new weapon, and the Thetis will have been their first full-scale test!

Without realizing it, rescue team 88 destroyed the Thargoid vessel transmitting the signal and probably saved humanity. We owe them big time!

You hold a minute’s silence in honor of all the victims before destroying this alien weapon once and for all.

Congratulations Jameson, you’ve solved the mystery of the Thetis!
