The Lost Pages of the Survival Guide

'Bip biiip... Bip biiip... Bip biiip...'

The sound from your on-board computer wakes you from your sleep. Judging by the trace of the keyboard on your cheek, it looks as if you've fallen asleep in the driver's seat.
As your eyes gradually adjust to the light, you read the screen in front of you...

After a few seconds' hesitation, your memory finally kicks in: you had started deciphering a mysterious document found on a shipwreck in the system Onuris.
You turn on the coffee maker to wake up. The smell of hot coffee fills the cabin and you begin to discover this strange message.

A mysterious message

This coffee bombs in you, and that's exactly what you were looking for.
You now have a clear head and open the message decoded by your on-board computer.

Faced with this puzzling message, you remain perplexed.
Suddenly, your on-board computer starts beeping again and you discover this message.

You're sure of it, decoding this message will lead you on the trail of this mysterious "Survival Guide". You've run out of coffee and nothing better to do all day.

Ahead CMDR !

Once you’ve found the first position, go on to step 2

First location

You arrive in the first system and head for the planet. You launch probes and the scan reveals what you’re looking for: A strange Anaconda shipwreck matricule MD-001.

You start downhill and see what looks like an Anaconda converted into a temporary base. At least, it probably was originally.
You will also notice that the gravity is quite high, just make sure you don’t end up like this poor bastard.

First location

An inspection is in order. You climb into your SRV and start exploring the empty facility.

You notice data links and use your scanner to download the content.

Survival Tips 1/11
I’m not sure anyone will hear this, but if I don’t do this I think I might go crazy. So here goes.
If you find yourself stranded on an alien planet here are some tips to help you survive. I mean I’m not going to cover the usual things that you find in your Pilots Federation manual.
These are the real things that people just don’t tell you.

Survival Tips 2/11
Tip 1:
Make sure your comms system is not an antiquated piece of crap and that you maintain radio contact with flight control in each system.
Otherwise you might not be able to call for help.
Yeah. who has two thumbs and forgot to fix his comms system. That’s right folks… this guy.

Survival Tips 4/11
Tip 3:
Oh. I almost forgot this one !
On the off chance that you’ve crashed on a planet don’t, whatever you do, trade in your emergency transponder for a bottle of out of date Indi Bourbon a week before the crash. It turns out those things are important and despite what some people might tell you, your ship needs to have one.
It might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people do it. Yeah, you know who you are.

Astonishing. It’s more like discovering the logbook of a captain in a bad situation than anything else.
But in any case, you’ve had 3 pages out of 11, where can the others be hiding….

Just then, a beep sounds in your cabin. Your on-board computer seems to have picked up a message.

Another message to decode!
It will surely give you the next destination to collect the missing pages.

Once you’ve found the second system, go on to step 3

Second location

Eventually you manage to decode this second location and activate your FSD to get there!
With the planet in sight, you send out probes and discover your second stop: another Anaconda.

Second location

Once again, you discover an Anaconda recycled as a makeshift base. Data seems to be accessible again.
You start your SRV engine and download these logs.

Survival Tips 3/11
Tip 2:
Oh yeah this is a big one !
If you have to crash on a planet make sure your cargo hold is full of useful stuff like evac shelters, food, basic meds or replacement parts for your newly wrecked ship.
Whatever you do don’t fill it with cargo that’s as much use a chocolate fuel scoop.

Survival Tips 6/11
Tip 29:
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times: survival on a hostile planet is all about the prep. Prep, prep, prep.
Plan your crashes, it makes it a whole lot easier than being surprised by one and then thinking, wow I wish I’d planned this crash better !

As you reread the recovered notes, your on-board computer starts ringing again. A new encoded message has been received.

Once you’ve found the third system, go on to step 4

Third location

At last you’ve found the damn system!
This one will have given you a hard time, but you’ve done it. You engage your FSD and jump into the system. You take the direction of your target and mechanically repeat the same actions.
Once you’ve sent your probes, you’ve got your target in sight.

Third location

You set off to explore the abandoned base with your SRV.
Behind a tarpaulin in a state of disrepair, you find a data link. You retrieve the precious missing pages.

Survival Tips 5/11
Tip 12:
Wash your hands after using the biowaste in your cargo hold to attempt to make a garden. Seriously, hygiene is important. who knows what this stuff is. It smells terrible and really doesn’t taste very nice. I might not be making another message for a while.

Survival Tips 7/11
Tip 14:
Make sure your ship has a cabin you can seal off after you’ve had an eye watering stomach bug.
Plastic and duct tape are not essential to seal the door, but they can make the job easier and prevent leaks.
Maybe I should have put the plastic on the floor first.

Survival Tips 8/11
Tip 20:
If you’re trying to grow your own food there is no point in planting food cartridges. They don’t grow.
However, the algae in the air purifiers will grow like crazy so no need to plant anything, just scrape the stuff off the filters and you’ve got yourself a top notch dining experience for one.

You’ve barely had time to archive the new pages you’ve found when your on-board computer informs you that it has received a new encrypted message to decipher.
If the initial message was correct, this is the very last to be deciphered.

Once you’ve found the last system, go on to step 5

The reconstituted guide

Here it is at last, the last system. At last, you can complete the survival guide.
You head for the planet and once you’re close, as on previous occasions, you send out your probes to find out the position of the last Anaconda.
You can see it with your own eyes: the last refuge.

Fourth location

Without prolonging the suspense any further, you take your SRV out to scan the latest data links scattered around the refuge.

Survival Tips 9/11
Tip 77:
Whatever you do don’t go crazy and start talking to yourself, or worse start making a vid series of survival tips when you clearly have no clue what you’re talking about. I mean. seriously dude, you’re nuts.
What do you think is going to happen here?
Don’t give me that look !
Hey come back here l’m talking to you !
*sigh* That guy is driving me crazy.

Survival Tips 10/11
Tip 38:
This might be your first crash, it_might be, say, your 46th, not to be too specific about it, but learn from a pro. You can’t use domestic appliances to repair your thruster manifolds.
It turns out all that does is make a lot of smoke and a very loud bang. Not to mention the hull breach in the engine compartment.
Who knew, right?

Survival Tips 11/11
Tip 8:
A rookie mistake that a lot of first time crashers fall into is mixing up the water supply with the urine disposal system. Colour code that bad boy !

I’m serious! That stuff has a wicked after taste that just doesn’t go away.

Well done, you’ve finally finished putting together the pages of the Survival Guide.
You can now pass it on to all new explorers so they don’t fall into the same traps as that poor anonymous CMDR.
