The story of 'The Scourge' recounts a period of great crisis in the late summer of 3305, marked by mass famines, acts of terrorism and critical decisions with catastrophic consequences.

This dramatic situation, which came close to becoming one of the worst famines in history, has its origins in 3301. The events of that era continue to have significant repercussions on today's Galaxy.

The adventure offers a concise and clear account of the key stages of this crisis, to better understand its unfolding and lasting impact.

The scourge is the third galactic initiative offered to pilots across the galaxy. Unlike Community Goals (CGs), Galactic Initiatives are events offering several linked CGs with a significant and lasting impact on the galaxy!

The Onion Head Affair

Before we look at what happened in 3305, let's jump back in time. See you in 3301.

You are invited to travel to the Kappa Fornacis system and land on the Harvestport station.

Open the market to find a rare product sold exclusively on this station. It's a drug banned in many systems, including (and especially) those of the Federation. You're free to buy and make a comfortable margin, or pass.

This rare commodity is called Onionhead. But before I tell you more about this drug, you should know that what takes place in 3305, and will leave its mark throughout the galaxy, is intimately linked to Onionhead. As is often the case, the consequences of certain actions are revealed many years later....in this case, a "Wise Man" would no doubt say about this story that you reap what you sow... in this case, the seed of the Scourge has indeed been planted on one of the planets in this system: and it's called... Panem.

Onionhead is a popular drug, often considered illegal, especially among young adults. Concerned about the consequences for the health of her constituents, the then President of the Federation, Jasmina Halsey, declared it illegal on December 16, 3300 (read news) and set up a blockade on Kappa Fornacis (read news) to prevent its sale.

This was a period of turmoil for the Federation, which waged a fierce battle against Onionhead cultivation and defended its territories in the Lugh system (the famous Lugh War in March 3301...but that's another story....).

On December 27, 3300, a federal warship bombed the Onion Head farms on the Panem planet of Kappa Fornacis. Admiral Vincent, in a statement, claims that the strikes were precise and that a biocidal agent was used, without danger to the inhabitants. This version is, of course, called into question by certain sources: Read the news in the Galnet.

The Federal President, at Christmas, calls for an investigation (to be read here), but the damage has already been done. Some people will never forgive this act and will take revenge a few years later, in 3305.

Onionhead will continue to be cultivated thanks to the support of Imperial Senator Torval, and will be available in various strains (Lucan Onionhead, Onionhead Alpha Strain and Onionhead Beta Strain) in order to circumvent federal bans (each new name requires the enactment of a new ban law... in short, a cat-and-mouse game). The most recent strain was created by the Kumo gang and the Blue Viper Club in July 3307, and named "Onionhead Gamma Variety".

Go to the DISO system. But before you do, don't forget to scan the onion-head marketing ban tourist ballista orbiting the planet Panem.

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

Famine looms

In September 3305, the Diso system was the site of the Alliance Culture Festival, held between July and September. Every week the festival moved from system to system where a major cultural event was taking place (the systems for these events were, in order: Lave, Leesti, Phekda, Olgréa, Tionisla, Alioth and Diso)

However, the latter is linked to "The Scourge" adventure. Diso is a key agricultural system, and in the summer of 3305, harvests were dramatically lower than in previous years. This significant drop in production was a huge source of concern that spread throughout the bubble. Read the news

On October 10, 3305 a call to the pilot community was launched in the Diso and Orerve systems. To mitigate the impact of low agricultural yields, pilots were asked to deliver pesticides, synthetic reagents and grain. For Diso, these commodities were to be delivered to the Shifnalport station.

So let's go and land on Shifnalport. But just before that, you're invited to scan the system's two tourist tags:

- History of DISO (n°0238) confirming the importance of this system for its agricultural capabilities.

- Délinés de DISO (n°0239), which features an endemic species.

Once you've landed in Shifnalport, buy the local agricultural specialty (another rare commodity) if you wish: Diso's Ma Corn.

We've almost finished with this system, but before we leave Diso, let's get back to The Scourge and the EX7!

The spectre of famine has prompted an industrialist named Rockforth Corporation to sell a revolutionary fertilizer, bypassing a few safety controls to meet the most urgent needs. EX7 fertilizer hits the market!

This fertilizer was widely disseminated in a large number of systems to counter the decline in agricultural productivity. EX7 spread like a virus, with disastrous consequences!

Edmund Mahon was born in the Diso system in 3187, on the planet Birmingham, where his parents grew corn!

Also in this system, planet 5c requires a permit to land. To date, there is no information on how to obtain this permit, and no pilot has yet been able to land there!

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

EX7 goes global

So let's land on Watson Stationand now enter Phase 2 of The Scourge.

The EX7 Fertilizer has been spread across a huge number of systems, but it turns out that the latter is actually a " Trojan horse ".

On October 14, a mysterious Plague is discovered. The disease affects plantations and destroys them simultaneously in several systems, as Dr. Genevieve Kane of the Interstellar Agricultural Association (AIMA), or IAA in English, points out. Dr. Kane also announces that, at this time, no treatment is able to destroy or reverse this disease (read the news).

On October 16, a causal link between the Scourge and EX7 fertilizer came to light. This "miracle" fertilizer is indeed the cause of all this destruction. It must be withdrawn from the market as a matter of urgency, before the Scourge spreads any further than it already has. The galaxy's pilots are therefore invited to buy EX7 fertilizer at a modest price and bring it back to the Teveri system as soon as possible for destruction.
The fertilizer was to be collected from the following stations and transported to the Wiley Port station (Teveri system):

Lave Station (Lave)

Warinus (Lave)

Shifnalport (Diso)

Davies High (Reorte)

Watson Station (Orerve)

Roentgen Hub (LFT 37)

Macedo Station (Lei Zi)

Phillips Gateway (Ensoreus)

Baird Gateway (Arque)

La Soeur du Dan Ham (Riedquat)

You're free to tour these systems with your ship. Of course, don't look for the EX7 on the market: it no longer exists!

In support of the community operation, substantial discounts had been offered by manufacturer Lakon on the sale of Type 6, Type 7 and Type 9 trading vessels (with the exception of Type 10, the latter having not yet been marketed at the time), as well as on bunker compartments. Read the news

We now return to the Quator system for the fourth stage of our adventure.

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

The source of the Scourge

Once the threat of the EX7 release had been averted, the question of this mysterious disease occupied the galactic scene:

On October 18, the superpowers launched a joint investigation (read the news).

On October 20, 3305, the source of the EX7 problem is discovered by the superpower task force: a chemical compound has contaminated EX7 releasing a pathogenic toxin that kills all plant matter! It is therefore clear that this is a deliberate act of terrorism (read news).

On October 22, those responsible for sabotaging the EX7 were discovered. They were an extremist group based in Kappa Fornacis: the Scythe of Panem. This group infiltrated the Riedquat system to contaminate the fertilizer in reaction to an old story dating back to 3301 with the Federation: the destruction of crops on Panem in Kappa Fornacis! Several Scythe of Panem cells were then located in the Quator system, and this discovery triggered violent conflicts. A call went out in this system for pilots to destroy Scythe of Panem (read news). This community objective took place between October 22 and 28 and will result in the defeat of the Scythe of Panem activists (read the news).

Now that the source of the problem has been identified, let's meet in the Leesti system for our final stage of the adventure: the discovery of the cure.

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

Treatment discovery

While fighting rages on in the Quator system against Scythe of Panem activists, research to combat the plague continues. Although EX7 fertilizer is now eradicated, bad news arrives on October 23. The pathogen is showing signs of mutation and continues to spread (read news) and the food situation continues to deteriorate in a large number of systems (read news).

Fortunately, the news isn't all bad. Now go and land on the George Lucas station. Also take advantage of the trip through this system to pick up the 2 beacons there:

History of Leesti (n°0242) and Leesti is free (n°0649).

Also found in this system is a mega ship: the Chariot of Rhea, a famous vessel belonging to Sirius Corporation, at the center of several stories read news about Chariot of Rhea

Once on the station, go to the market. You should find a product that went on sale in October 3305. As the plague can spread throughout inhabited space, AIMA has developed a treatment: the agronomic treatment. This is on sale at a number of stations, including George Lucas (read the news)

Pilots have been invited to collect this treatment and deliver it to the Diso and Orerve systems to put an end to the Scourge, which is announced to be defeated on October 31, 3305 read news

CONCLUSION

the Scourge vanquished? Not quite! Since then, the Scourge has continued to spread throughout the galaxy, frequently re-emerging in inhabited systems. Try to see if a Blight "state" is currently active. To do this, you can use a filter in your galactic map. If you spot one, load up on Agronomic Treatments and head out to fight the Scourge.

This new mechanism, the stigma of "The Scourge" event, dates from this period;

Grâce à cette aventure, vous savez maintenant d’où vient l’état FLEAU et comment lutter contre lui.

Perhaps you've come across ships with "The Scourge" logo on the hull? This means that the commander took part in this adventure and received this honorary decoration in recognition of his efforts.

It is no longer possible today to obtain this rare and esteemed decoration, any more than the one honoring the "Bridging the Gap" or "Golconda" adventures two other galactic initiatives....

But this is another story ....
