These few days spent at the Earth's Inheritance Wildlife Reserve in the LP 339-7 system have done you a world of good, and you're feeling in great shape to embark on new adventures. Then your Datapad starts flashing: you've received a message ...

Tourism beacons orbiting LP 339-7 4 A will tell you more about the station you're in.

SOURCE

Hello CMDR,

I'd like to ask you to help me with an old investigation of mine. At the time, it was a vague rumor linked to military weapons testing gone wrong. Recently, one of my informants discovered a message picked up by a listening post and I think it might have something to do with this story.

If you're interested, join my informant at Von Krusenstern's Folly in the Aura system, and he'll pass on the coordinates of the listening post in question. Follow this lead and gather as much information as possible during your investigation.

I know we're not as well known as Galnet, but would a front-page article in the Frontier News with your name on it tempt you?

Nellie Bly - Journalist - Frontier News

Go to the Aura system.

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

INDICATOR

You land your ship near the tiny Von Krusenstern's Folly base on Aura ABC 6 F in order to meet the informant there. You approach the door to the main bunker and knock.

What is the code written in white on the bunker door?

*** A man opens the bunker door ***

Are you from Frontier News? Look, I don't want any trouble and I don't want to get involved in anything. So you take this document and get the hell out immediately. We don't know each other and we've never met!

*** The man hands you a document and slams the door in your face ***

You return to your ship and take time to analyze the document you've just retrieved.

HR XXXX

What is the name of the system in which the listening station is located?

Go to the HR 6348 system.

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

LOCATION

You arrive in the HR 6348 system. You must find and scan the listening post that is in this system.

Scanning this listening post, you discover a disturbing message and the location of two other listening posts in the vicinity. After scanning them, you can perform a trilateration to determine the point of origin of the communication.

You can use the site's trilateration tool to help you with this task.

What is the name of the system from which the communication originates?

A misfortune seems to have befallen Aldhibah 1 A.

Go to the Aldhibah system.

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

INVESTIGATION

Once near Aldhibah 1 A, you use your surface scanner and discover the presence of a Lookout Military Test Facility.

You land near the military base and start investigating. Diaries, photos, evidences: gather as much information as you can.

It seems that the firmware for these skimmers was modified before being delivered here. Testing? Sabotage? Piracy? The cause of this carnage remains unclear. The matter was probably hushed up by the manufacturer Core Dynamics to protect its image with its customers.

There's a lot of competition in the skimmer market: Although Core Dynamics has a monopoly on the market with their Sentry/Guardian/Goliath models, the Achilles corporation is booming in this field with the Stinger-2. The latter is less powerful and, above all, much more affordable.

S4 Sentry

S4 Sentry:
This is the most widely used skimmer in the vast semi-automated security and protection industry throughout the galaxy, and a mainstay product for Core Dynamics. Comes as standard with a belly-mounted standard recoil-ready small weapon mount, which will take both kinetic and thermal weapons. Designed with an automated alert system so a single pilot can operate multiple drones.

S5LM Guardian:

Based on their S4 skimmers but with reduced weight, and with an enhanced missile launcher weapon mount. A more expensive solution, but often used to protect higher value installations. It sacrifices armour to carry the weight of missiles and so is more vulnerable.

S5LM Guardian

S9 Goliath

S9 Goliath:

A very effective solution to your security needs. Using four surface thrusters this armoured and well-armed skimmer is the most effective on the market. Its greater cost means it is generally only used by military clients, and use is not permitted in some jurisdictions given their offensive abilities.

Stinger-2:

Smaller and quicker than Core Dynamics offerings in this sector, and also cheaper to buy. It has no weapon mount, but carries explosives, and can be directed by its pilot to self destruct, taking out its target. Some installations use these skimmers to form a last line of defence for sensitive bases and outposts. In essence they are a flying bomb.

Digging into the base's logs, you discover on the delivery manifest that skimmers from the same batch have also been delivered to the Fibonacci Survey science base in the V640 Cassiopeia system. Better get a move on and go take care of those skimmers before another tragedy strikes!

Go to the V640 Cassiopeia system.

Once you've completed this step, move on to the next.

INTERVENTION

You arrive in the V640 Cassiopeia system and easily locate the Fibonacci Survey base in your ship's navigation panel. You set off for the planet A 6 a and start thinking about your strategy.

Your mission is to infiltrate the science base with your SRV in orderto disable the skimmers before they get out of hand and start attacking base personnel.

Safety instructions for approaching the base:

- Land your ship at a minimum distance of 3 km from the base.
- Do not approach the base with your ship closer than 3 km.
- Do not cross the security perimeter with your ship.

- Approach the base in SRV only.

Safety instructions for the perimeter of the base:

- Do not exit the SRV.

- Do not shoot the skimmers.
- Do not shoot the turrets.

- Do not scan elements or tags marked as 'Private'.

- You can stay as long as you like within the perimeter of the base.

Protocol for disabling skimmers :

- You must scan 2 'Skimmer Override Terminal' beacons.

- These tags are indicated on the base map below by numbers 18 and 19.

Map of the scientific database (Source: CMDR DJA)

The base map was produced by CMDR DJA. You can find the inventory and mapping work carried out at the time of the DLC Horizons release by CMDR DJA at these various links:

- ED Horizons settlements (Google Doc)
- ED Horizons locations list (Google Doc)

- Planetary Horizons Settlements (edtools.cc)

If you comply with all the safety instructions listed above, you'll remain within the law. However, if you ever pick up a fine and trigger the hostility of the base's defense systems, simply walk away from the base, log off, then log back on.

Skimmer Override Terminal (x2)

Once the 2 beacons have been scanned, all the skimmers in the base are deactivated. They are no longer visible on your scanner, but as you walk around the base you notice that they are now inoperative, lying on the ground. Mission Accomplished: you've probably avoided another massacre!

You have now gathered enough data in this investigation and you are sending everything to the journalist Nellie Bly. The story of a military base devastated by its own skimmers  and the rescue of the scientific base will make for an exciting first article for Frontier News!
