Engineering Guide

Material traders, ships, collection locations, and unlocking engineers: Chelito’s guide to preparing your module engineering in Elite Dangerous.

Material traders

A Material trader is a station service that functions like a currency exchange: it allows you to trade engineering components you have in excess for those you’re missing, thereby saving you hours of unnecessary farming.

A very effective method is to farm only the rarest materials in each category, then trade them for the ones you need within the same branch. Prioritize Grade 5 materials for manufactured and Encoded items, and Grade 4 materials for Raw items, before converting them into lower-tier materials via the Material trader.

Material trader interface

For your first material trades, choose a convenient reference system you can easily return to. This guide uses Shinrarta Dezhra as a starting point. If you do not have its permit yet, choose a central system near you.

Shinrarta Dezhra

Shinrarta Dezhra is a star system accessible only via an exclusive permit, which is automatically obtained after reaching Elite Rank in one of the three main disciplines: Combat, Exploration, or Trade.

This system is known worldwide among pilots as the home of theJameson Memorial station, the only place in the galaxy where absolutely every ship and module in the game is in stock, with the added bonus of a permanent 10% discount.

Bookmark the stations below: they are all close to Shinrarta Dezhra and less than 10 light-seconds from their main star, making them convenient for trading materials.

Stations near Shinrarta Dezhra

If you want another reference system, you can use this link INARA to locate Traders near your position. Simply click on "Change Search" and then enter your system in the "Near System" field.

The ship

To collect your materials, equip a ship with a good jump range, a fuel scoop, a cargo rack, at least one Collector Limpet Controller and a Scarab or Scorpion SRV. Remember to buy limpets before setting off.

Mandalay

Mandalay

The Mandalay is well suited to this task, particularly thanks to its SCO drive.

Collection Locations

1️⃣ Manufactured materials — by ship

High Grade Emissions can be found using the FSS, or by scanning the Nav Beacon (recommended and faster).

To be collected using limpets.

Tip

Do not target a resource directly before launching your limpets. Launch them into empty space: they will automatically collect all nearby resources without self-destructing after a single delivery.

Prioritize systems with a large population (several billion inhabitants).

Search for systems at Inara

Use this list to find Grade 5 manufactured materials:

  • Alliance / Independent in War or Civil War: Military Alliances & Military Supercapacitors INARA & INARA
  • Alliance / Independent in Riot: Improvised ComponentsINARA
  • Imperial in Election: Imperial ShieldingINARA

2️⃣ Manufactured and encoded materials — optional, as High Grade Emissions are much more efficient. Bring an SRV and Detailed Surface Scanner to locate the settlement.

5️⃣ Thargoid materials (Sensor Fragments and Meta-Alloys) — with an SRV

To unlock Professor Palin, you will need 25 Sensor Fragments, which can be found at this Thargoid crash site:

System: HIP 17403
Body: A 4 A

Use your SRV ’s cannon to destroy the Thargoid Sensors on site to release fragments, then collect them using the SRV ’s cargo hold.

Another, less effective method for farming Sensor Fragments is to visit active Thargoid Surface Sites; you can view the list of these sites here: (TS) - Canonn - Thargoid Structures - Old Code: US - Google Sheets.

You can also find Meta-Alloy around these locations. It will be particularly useful for unlocking “Felicity Farseer.”

Example of an active site:

System: HIP 14909
Body: 2 A

Active Thargoid structures are teeming with Scavengers, floating limpets that maintain the site.

When you deploy your SRV and destroy these Scavengers with your weapons, they have a chance to drop Sensor Fragments upon death.

The Scorpion SRV is useful for this task.

Unlocking engineers

When you start engineering your modules, you can pin one engineering blueprint per engineer. Once a blueprint is pinned, you can apply it remotely from any station or Fleet Carrier (FC), without having to return to the engineer.

However, it is not possible to add an experimental effect remotely. To do so, you will need to return to the engineer in question.

Remember to pin the engineering blueprint you will need before leaving each engineer.
